Mazda has announced a new “paint & wheels” package for the Roadster (MX-5) in the Japanese market. Dubbed the “Blaze Edition,” it’s available in two colors — Radiant Ebony Mica (shown) or Highland Green Mica, and features lightweight forged BBS wheels plus a host of other model-specific trim elements such as clear markers and turn signals, chrome exterior trim, aluminum cabin accents and a sand beige leather interior.

The package can be had for either the traditional ragtop or the new power retractable hardtop, and prices range from ¥2,840,000 to ¥3,135,000 depending on the trim/roof/tranny combo it’s applied to. Looks good to us, and we’re digging the rims in particular.

If you’re in Japan, you can place your order now.

ROUSH Roadster: Super-limited, super-cool

At SEMA this year ROUSH introduced the Roadster, a head-turning droptop ‘Stang that is now available through authorized retailers. If you want one of the two-tone beauties, you’d better get to it, because ROUSH is only building 100 of ‘em, and Jack sure sounds like he’s going to keep one for himself (see the attached press release). That still leaves 99 cars. The car’s two-tone finish features black on top and Torch Red, Redfire, Vista Blue, Silver or Grabber Orange on the lower portion. A pinstripe separates the colors, and the result is very, very good-looking.

All cars also feature a Roush light bar, lowered suspension, and 20″ wheels. Buyers can give their Roadsters performance to match their appearance by selecting the optional ROUSHcharger upgrade, which bestows the 4.6L V8 with 415-horsepower when mated to a 5-speed manual. Further augmentation in the form of custom interior bits, a short-throw shifter and more can be added to further personalize each car to the owner’s tastes.

To the lucky few who’ll park one of these sleds in their garage, know that we’re painting ourselves a color that’s not available for the cars themselves: Envy Green.

Check out the full press release after the jump, and feast your eyes on the Roadster in our gallery.

Spy Shots: Merc SLR McLaren convertible

Wednesday, December 31st, 1969

We’ve known for a while that Mercedes was hard at work on a drop-top version of the McLaren SLR and now, courtesy of Car and Driver, we get to see it. Clear images they aren’t, but there’s no mistaking that long bonnet and those wide haunches as a lesser Benz.

The spies were able to capture the SLR during a photo shot in the Canary Islands and judging by the pics, there’s little to no change from the standard hardtop version. According to C&D, the roadster will get a cloth roof, rather than a folding hardtop, in an effort to cut down on costs and there’s a possibility that the butterfly doors may need to be nixed.

Regardless, with 617 HP, a 3.7-second sprint to 60 and a top speed of 207 MPH, there’s no doubt that this will be the fastest open air motoring experience available. The only problem we can see is trying to not look like the victim of a blow-dryer accident after a quick run to redline.

The when and where is still up in the air, but don’t expect the SLR roadster to come in below a cool half a million dollars.

Mazda Roadster Mazdaspeed M'z Tune

Introduced as one of the many “concepts” Mazda trotted out for the 2007 Tokyo Auto Salon, the Roadster Mazdaspeed M’z Tune has shed that part of its moniker and is now available through Mazda’s Japanese stores as of April 6. A product of Mazda E&T (Engineering & Technology), the M’z tune sheds its open-spoke 5-star wheels and fender-mounted side extractor vents in the transition from concept to production vehicle. 10-spoke alloys and a regular, vent-free fender appear on the customer cars, and the concept’s Mazdaspeed badging is carried through.
