The vacuum left by the insight was in need of filling, and Honda’s Small Hybrid Sports Concept is one idea to plug the hole. Designed by the Honda R&D team in Germany, the powertrain consists of an IMA 4-cylinder gasoline/electric hybrid system that sends power to the front wheels through a CVT transmission. With three cars in the Top 10 Best-Selling Hybrids of 2006, Honda’s got a lot to shout about and they’re planning to use one of the world’s biggest stages to do just that. Honda have announced that they will be airing three television advertisements during the broadcast of this year’s Super Bowl, one of which, a thirty-second spot called “Slalom” will reinforce Honda’s fuel-efficiency leadership.
“The Super Bowl remains one of the best opportunities to reach a wide television audience in one shot,” said John Mendel, senior vice president of American Honda. “Many Super Bowl viewers look forward to the commercials almost as much as the game, and Honda has taken this great opportunity to highlight a couple of its key brand values through fun and creative ads.”
Honda, which boasts the highest fleet-wide fuel economy of any major automaker, increased its U.S. sales by three percent last year as consumers looked to smaller, and more fuel efficient vehicles to offset record fuel prices.
Other manufacturers have not announced Super Bowl spots. Last year Ford showed off its Escape Hybrid, and Toyota showcased its Camry Hybrid. In the past, Honda used the Super Bowl to launch the Ridgeline. The Super Bowl is set for Feb. 4 in Miami. A 30-second spot last year cost about $2.5 million.

While Honda’s corporate message continually stresses safety and fuel economy, today’s introduction of the Accord Coupe Concept emphasized style, attitude and sizzle. Honda product boss John Mendel didn’t need a speech writer to emphasize the Accord’s significance to the company.
“The Accord is the single most important product for Honda,” Mendel said, noting that almost 10 […]

It has been some time since Honda has launched the new CRV. The review at Business Standard Motoring says it is better than the old CRV, but still has room to improve. They also think it is not exactly value for money.
So you do get a safe automobile when you put in Rs 20 lakh and some more for your CR-V. It has got the space, has more comfort at the back (if you employ a chauffeur), ride

When Honda released information about the development of its Advanced VTEC (A-VTEC) system in September, we were looking forward to seeing how the new system would be employed in the next generation of Acuras and Hondas. The system will increase torque, power and fuel economy, all while oozing fewer emissions into the atmosphere. Good stuff, all of it.
Not much has been released since, but the variable valve timing obsessed folks over that the Temple of VTEC (TOV) came across a new patent filed by Honda entitled the “Variable valve actuation device.” The setup is similar to BMW’s Valvetronic system, by varying the lift and duration of the valves throughout the powerband, likely eliminating that abrupt, albeit entertaining, switch over to the hot lobes. It can be employed in both SOHC and DOHC applications and will likely find a home in the 2008 model Accord.
More power, more torque, less emissions, plus the option of a lightweight SOHC engine? Bring it.

Yesterday, Ben Stewart over at Popular Mechanics had a close encounter of the prototype kind while spending some time on the Angeles Crest Highway in So. Cal. He caught a glimpse of a camo’d current generation Accord sitting in a local lot and, knowing that it could be driven away at a moment’s notice, began snapping pics of the moribund mule.
Now, an Accord sporting an ill-fitting bra is nothing to get too excited over, until Ben figured out that it’s actually the next generation Acura TSX in drag. Supposedly, underneath the body panels is the “new” TSX chassis, necessitating those awkwardly flared fenders, housing 225/50ZR17 tires.
He came to this unlikely conclusion after noticing a few other TSXs following the mule (comparison testing) and when he got back to the office, Stewart made few calls. Turns out that the upcoming TSX will be built on an all new platform, likely using the turbo mill that’s found in the new RDX, with the option of sending power to all four wheels.
What’s it going to look like you ask? Less crease, more swoop is the short answer. But if you need a bit more detail than that, check the Honda Sports4 Concept that debuted at the 2005 Tokyo Motor Show.

This winter continues to take a toll. Tribalwar member “dweeb” (no comments necessary, his name speaks for itself) has had his Honda involuntarily transformed into a quiescently frozen confection. Apparently, a water main burst in dweeb’s Columbus, Ohio neighborhood, sending many gallons of water flooding into his grapeity purple econobox.

Chrysler will further tout its connection to Mercedes beginning with the launch of the Sebring convertible. Well, gee, the Mercedes DNA is fairly oozing off the Sebrings, isn’t it? Underwhelmed by the Sebring sedan’s sales performance thus far, Chrysler has decided to move the image for the entire brand upmarket. The idea is to play up the idea of “German Engineering” while also emphasizing that Chrysler is the premium American offering under the DCX tent. Ultimately, the goal is to attract customers from Toyota and Honda, which are also seen as premium-engineered vehicles.
Time will tell how successful they are about passing off the Sebring and other mainstream Chryslers as having any link to Mercedes (LX platform excluded). The “merger of equals” has played out more like Mercedes throwing their dregs over to Chrysler in the form of the R170 platform for the Crossfire and the suspension design under the LX cars. The mainstream Chryslers — the ones that actually need to be popular instead of the halo cars — have nary a lick of Mercedes in ‘em as far as we can tell. Premium in this case must mean content and value for the dollar, which the Chrysler line certainly represents. Then again, how strong is the connection between Chrysler and Mercedes-Benz if one is about to be auctioned off to the highest bidder?

We (and many of you) were blown away by Acura’s Advanced Sports Car Concept when it was unveiled at NAIAS in January. Though we were a bit disappointed the concept was only a non-running turntable tease, Honda assured everyone that an improved, closer-to-production show car was in the works for the October Tokyo show.
Winding Road says its sources have heard the contrary, that Honda is going back to the high-performance drawing board to come up with a more super supercar. Word is the ASC just isn’t impressing as many people as it needs to be. Perhaps Honda management saw the ASC wasn’t its company’s best effort, and instead of dumping the project entirely (like Chrysler did with the ME Four-Twelve or Ford with the GR-1), it’s committing the resources needed to create something truly special in the $100,000+ sport coupe segment. As such, we’re not quite sure what we’ll see in October at the Tokyo Auto Show, if anything at all.
At least this is what we hope they’re doing. Honda could have scrapped the whole thing and reallocated the funds to development of the next generation Pilot. Eeek!

If there’s one vehicle that’s leading the pack for “Car of the Future, Today,” it’s the Toyota Prius. The world’s most popular hybrid will have it’s own plug-in version sooner than expected, but the competition isn’t waiting to try and take its hybrid crown. Honda’s “Prius fighter” has been talked about for what seems like ages (spy shots here) and we’re getting awfully close to seeing the real deal. We already know it’ll look something like the fuel cell-driven FCX Clarity, but details beyond that are scarce. We had been told the reveal would happen at the Paris Motor Show next month, but word from Honda is that we’ll now see it in just 48 hours when the concept version is revealed on Thursday, Sept. 4th. After that we can view the concept in person at the Paris show, and then the production version is expect to bow at the Detroit Auto Show in January.
Honda will begin selling the car early next year and word is that it will be affordable. While the official MSRP is still a long way off, Honda’s UK environmental manager John Kingston told Just-Auto (sub. req’d) that it should not cost more than “traditional cars from rival manufacturers.” Hybrid premium, what hybrid premium? On the technical front, the size of the car’s revised Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) hybrid system has been reduced and the lighter powerplant will help push up its MPG numbers. What those are remains a mystery, but Honda is expecting to sell around 200,000 of these puppies a year, with half of those being bought in the U.S. Sounds good, now can we just see the thing already?
