BMW switching to turbocharged M cars

After two decades of normally-aspirated high-revving engines shoehorned under the hoods of its M cars, BMW is changing direction and will begin to offer direct-injection turbocharged powerplants in its future high-performance flagships. The German automaker is blaming tough environmental emission standards and the soaring manufacturing costs of the specialty-built V8 and V10 engines found in today’s M3, M5, and M6 models for its decision. We also suspect the fact that both Audi and Mercedes-Benz have successfully offered torque-laden forced-induction powerplants for years on their performance models may have something to do with it (also keep in mind that an aftermarket-tuned version of BMW’s own twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-6 can easily match the power output of the M3’s normally-aspirated 4.0-liter V8). The first new M model to carry the turbocharged honor will be the X6 xDrive M, with a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 reportedly making 500 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. That same engine is reportedly going into the next F10-chassis M5 due in late 2010.

Volvo Trucks, which has full control of the Mack Trucks brand in North America and Renault Trucks in Europe, will be showing off an example of their hybrid diesel-electric D7 engine and I-SAM (Integrated Starter, Alternator Motor) drivetrain system at the Commercial Vehicle Show to be held in Birmingham, U.K. in late April.

The D7 engine and I-SAM have been developed in-house by Volvo and is a parallel hybrid system where the diesel engine and electric motors can work independently of each other. Thanks to efficient interaction between the two power sources, a smaller diesel engine can be used without compromising on performance. Incorporating regenerative breaking, the system is also highly efficient in stop-start urban environments where tests results have indicated that fuel savings of up to 35 are possible. Other features of the system are significant reductions in emissions and noise levels.

Also on display at the Volvo stand will be the recently-launched 540 hp / 402 kW version of the new Volvo FH16 truck as well as examples of the new FL and FE ranges, making their first appearance at the CV Show.

Analysis: 35 percent is a massive fuel saving around urban centres where the reduction in emissions will also be really appreciated. We first covered the D7 back in August last year and its good to see it’s now on the market. I want to see government agencies as a start mandating use of hybrid trucks for their own fleets to send a positive message to the market.

Siemens VDO has announced that for the first time an engine equipped with piezo direct injection gasoline (DIG) technology has featured in Ward’s 10 Best Engine List of 2007. The 300 hp / 224 kW BMW 335i Twin Turbo 3-liter engine, which features Siemens VDO DIG technology, was unveiled at the Geneva Auto Show last year.

The piezo technology, in conjunction with advanced engine management systems, is credited for delivering higher torque and improved vehicle fuel economy. Direct injection fuel delivery, which is widely used in diesel engines, injects gasoline directly into the engine’s combustion chamber, enabling the vehicle to start with less fuel, while simultaneously improving vehicle drivibility and emissions.

Ever-tightening emissions requirements, teamed with consumers’ lust for today’s high horsepower numbers, have led to some creative valve timing and lift schemes. Infiniti’s G37 will be pack some interesting tech underhood when it debuts at the upcoming New York International Auto Show. There are actually two new developments working in conjunction to give independent control over valve timing and lift. Nissan has dubbed the control technologies Variable Valve Event and Lift and Continuous Valve Timing control, or VVEL and C-VTC, respectively. VVEL uses a clever arrangement of links to actuate the valves, and moves the fulcrum for the links via a seperate shaft actuated by a DC motor. By moving the fulcrum, the valve lift is varied.
