We know that McLaren has a sense of humor, we simply never know when it’s going to reveal itself. Happily for us, the team has decided it’s time to laugh again. The Singapore Grand Prix, on September 28, is the first Formula 1 race at night, and team CEO Martin Whitmarsh gives us a little insight into McLaren’s preparations. This is the kind of silly season that makes sense. Follow the jump for the video. Thanks for the tip, Peter!

Jack White, one half of the Whites in the White Stripes, wrote and produced the new theme song for Quantum of Solace, sung by White and Alicia Keyes. Turns out that White also — unwittingly and unhappily — wrote the new theme song for Coke Zero. Coca-Cola has used an instrumental version of “Another Way to Die,” as well as a couple of Astons, to promote its diet drink that tastes like a diet drink even though they say it doesn’t. In our opinion, the commercial gets a resounding “meh,” but the song is thoroughly groovy. Follow the jump to check it out. Thanks for the tip, Marcus!

Autoblog Podcast #58

Wednesday, December 31st, 1969

Being the pundits we are, we have plenty to say in Autoblog Podcast #58. We start right off addressing the rumors of a GM/Chrysler deal, and offer myraid reasons why it’s not a good idea yet may be justifiable to some folks. We move on to flogging the VW/GM suicide commercial debate for a little while, which sets the stage for us discussing the Daytona 500, naturally. It’s also revealed that John’s on board to give NASCAR as much of a chance as he can stomach this season. So far, that amounts to about an hour and a half before the siren song of video games becomes too loud to ignore. Wrapping up, we trade opinions on the Maserati Coupe and the Audi A5 before touching briefly on the impending XM/Sirius merger. It’s chock-full of good stuff this time around, so enjoy the ‘cast! We’ll try and have an enhanced version with video up for you as soon as possible.

Automotive film archive goes live

Wednesday, December 31st, 1969

There’s something so magical about seeing old cars in motion. Especially period video of horseless carriages and pre-war classics motoring along. Or vintage racing footage showing our current museum pieces being flung about as their makers intended. If these kinds of images appeal to you, we have some good news. An extensive and rare collection of old automotive clips has just become available through Universal Motoring History Limited. Covering more than 100 years of automotive history, the archive has been assembled from private and professional film collections, advertisements and newsreels. Old film being what it is, the quality isn’t always stellar, but more than acceptable it seems.

You can see samples and a full listing of titles at www.auto-history.tv. Rather than movies about automobiles, this is a collection of short clips, generally two to 10 minutes long, many of which were thought to be lost. More than 500 clips are included in the full archive, covering everything from “the beginning of mass production, [to] world land speed record runs, car commercials, motor shows, new car launches, the evolution of car design, experimental cars, flying cars, famous drivers, stunt driving, unusual military machines and more.” You’ll also get to see racing at “Le Mans, Indianapolis, Monte Carlo and many of the other major international motor racing circuits, as well as hill climbs, street racing and stock car racing from around the world.”

The material is available in a unique format. You can purchase the weekly featured downloads for £3.99, or the whole archive saved on an external hard drive for £199. Get more details at their website. Check out the listings or sample clips while you’re there. Great new time waster.

New York Auto Show’s Top 5 commercials

Wednesday, December 31st, 1969

Commercials are suddenly and inexplicably becoming more and more vogue. We understand the Super Bowl thing, but now some of the biggest hitters on YouTube are unreleased commercials. The folks that run the New York Auto show recognized the trend, and decided to award the top five automotive commercials of the year at the opening ceremony of this year’s show.

We tend to agree with most of the picks for best commercials, but the ‘most liked’ ad is one of the most annoying and unpleasant commercials ever. Luckily, one video that didn’t make the list was that annoying Dodge Nitro commercial where the vehicle passes through the Earth and lands in China. Unfortunately, the really cool Nitro commercial where the Nitro blows a junker sky-high while giving it a jump didn’t win either.

Take a hop after the jump to see the winners, and four of the five commercials. While you’re at it, let us know what you thought was the the best automotive commercial of the year.
