The continued rise in gasoline prices as well as tighter rules on vehicle emissions are reviving automakers’ interests in alternative fuels specifically compressed natural gas or CNG. Toyota revealed plans to expand its line of alternatively-powered cars aside from the Prius by unveiling a new Camry Hybrid that will run on compressed natural gas rather […]

We know, it kind of sounds like the Camry Hybrid 50th Anniversary Edition is Toyota’s way of celebrating 50 years of selling hybrids, a mark it’s still a few decades or so away from achieving. Rather, according to the press release after the jump, this special edition Camry is meant to celebrate the 50 years that Toyota’s been doing business in the United States. We think a Tundra 50th Anniversary Edition would be more appropriate considering that’s one vehicle Toyota makes exclusively for the North American market, but whatev.

The Camry Hybrid 50th Anniversary Edition gets a bleached white Blizzard Pearl paint job, unique 16-inch wheels finished in graphite, and that one thing that any special edition model would be naked without: “50th Anniversary Edition” badges! A power moonroof and heated power side mirrors are also standard equipment. Inside the Hybrid Camry is decked out with a voice-actived nav unit, heated front seats and bisque-colored leather trim. Special trinkets include a brushed stainless steel dash applique, illuminated front door sills and carpeted floor mats, all bedecked with the “50th Anniversary Edition” logo.

Toyota will be producing only 3,000 of these celebratory cars, which will carry a base MSRP of $31,680. That’s a fair sized chunk of change more than a standard Camry Hybrid that starts at $26,200, but hey, you gotta pay the man if you want to party with Toyota.

For years, the large, family car market in Australia has been divided between the Aussie built GM Holden Commodore and the Ford Falcon, both on the road and on the track. The large car market has been characterised not only by their size, but also by V6 or V8 powerplants running on rear-wheel drive platforms. For years, other competitors, including Mitsubishi with their Magna and more recently their 380 models, have tried to chip away at this virtual duopoly, with limited success.

The game is changing though. As the price of fuel has risen, the Australian car market has seen a massive shift away from large cars and towards more fuel efficient, medium sized models. The market is currently dominated by vehicles like the Mazda6, the Honda Accord, the Hyundai Sonata and in particular, the Toyota Camry. As Australia’s largest passenger vehicle brand, Toyota has long enjoyed segment-leading sales with the Camry, and although it’s not a sexy choice, Toyota’s mid-sized sedan represents a smart purchase, with high re-sale value, good fuel economy and Toyota’s reputation for outstanding reliability.

Nokia tricks out Camry hybrid with gadgets at CES

Nokia Camry hybrid

MobileBurn has great images of a tricked-out Camry hybrid in the Nokia booth at CES. Nokia painted the car a cool green with white trees and added a slew of Nokia products. I contacted Nokia and Keith Nowak told me, “At each trade show, we generally do have a car in our booth to use as a platform for some of our automotive products - like handsfree kits and navigation devices. This year, since we are highlighting some of our environmental efforts as well, we decided that we would use a hybrid vehicle to stay in the theme - in this case, a Toyota Camry Hybrid.”

Fitting the green theme perfectly is Nokia’s 3110 Evolve cell phone and eco sensor concept which are also at the show. While very cool, I am not sure I can approve of the energy drain to the car’s battery caused by these un-essential devices. Except for that Nokia internet tablet which is really cool and therefore essential.
