Such promises have been made earlier by Ford too but we didn’t saw any results. Now, DaimlerChrysler has revealed its plans to develop all its future vehicles with a hybrid option. The CEO of the company Dieter Zetsche said that the hybrids are “very…

Mercedes-Benz put on an Icecapades-style show here at Detroit, simultaneously celebrating the 100-year anniversary of the all-wheel-drive Mercedes and of the Detroit auto show, where M-B had shown their first four-driver a century ago. Accompanied by a dogsled team, hockey players and figure skaters, the press conference-on-ice showcased Mercedes’ full range of 48 all-wheel-drive 4MATIC models globally, while simultaneously focusing on the introduction of the BLUETEC clean diesel technology. Lastly, fitting in to neither part of the split 4MATIC/BLUETEC double theme, the red carpet was rolled out for the Ocean Drive concept.

Alonso’s new wheels: McLaren SLR

Wednesday, December 31st, 1969

Now that’s more like it. The best Renault could seem to offer their driving ace Fernando Alonso was a Renaultsport Megane after winning two back-to-back world championships. But now that the defending champ has switched over the McLaren-Mercedes, his patrons have awarded him more suitable wheels: the 650-horsepower Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 722, a special edition of the supercar of which only 150 are being made. This, apparently, comes as a special treat in addition to the beautiful Mercedes CLS four-door coupe which will reportedly serve as Fernando’s daily driver. Not too shabby. Not too shabby at all.

No word yet on what Ferrari will give their new wonderboy Kimi Raikkonen, but it’d be a blast to see Kimi in a 599 GTB square off against Fernando in his SLR McLaren. Oh well, we’ll just have to watch them duke it out in Formula One race cars instead. This should be an interesting season.

Decision on CTS siblings coming soon

PHOTOS UPDATED

Cadillac is already on the upswing here in the US, and has been for some time. The image repair that GM has been able to carry out is impressive, and the rebirth is poised to enter phase two. GM Vice Chair Bob Lutz and Cadillac General Manager Jim Taylor both commented at the Geneva Motor Show that Lexus, BMW and Mercedes-Benz are in their gunsights, and that a 3-series-esque family of models could emerge from the CTS. A wagon version of the CTS is getting serious consideration as Cadillac looks at taking the fight to European turf.

Spy Shots: Merc SLR McLaren convertible

Wednesday, December 31st, 1969

We’ve known for a while that Mercedes was hard at work on a drop-top version of the McLaren SLR and now, courtesy of Car and Driver, we get to see it. Clear images they aren’t, but there’s no mistaking that long bonnet and those wide haunches as a lesser Benz.

The spies were able to capture the SLR during a photo shot in the Canary Islands and judging by the pics, there’s little to no change from the standard hardtop version. According to C&D, the roadster will get a cloth roof, rather than a folding hardtop, in an effort to cut down on costs and there’s a possibility that the butterfly doors may need to be nixed.

Regardless, with 617 HP, a 3.7-second sprint to 60 and a top speed of 207 MPH, there’s no doubt that this will be the fastest open air motoring experience available. The only problem we can see is trying to not look like the victim of a blow-dryer accident after a quick run to redline.

The when and where is still up in the air, but don’t expect the SLR roadster to come in below a cool half a million dollars.
