So, the other day I heard the Progressive Automotive X PRIZE’s Cristin Lindsay say that about 50 of the 100+ teams that might be part of the contest were working on small, neighborhood vehicles. Specifically, Lindsay said the following: “With our competition, we are seeing many, many companies, 50 or more, who are working on small, neighborhood vehicles. Some of them are electric, some of them are not.” Turns out that my assumption that this meant a lot of these were low-speed was not right. Bethann Buddenbaum, team development & relations manager of the Progressive Automotive X PRIZE, wrote in to AutoblogGreen with the following:

I’ve been following your posts in the AltCar Expo and, as always, have found them to be very informative. Unfortunately, I think there was a bit of confusion about Cristin’s statement on the Blue Bus panel.

What she said in the context of the conversation about urban transport and the Progressive Automotive X PRIZE was that about 1/2 of the competitors were working on commuter-type vehicles (i.e. smaller, more agile, able to decrease space usage on roads, etc.) For a quick reference, take a look at the LOI Contenders page on our website. I know with 120 teams, it’s a lot to take in, but the visual will help.

What Cristin referenced was Contenders such as Commuter Cars (0-60 in 4 seconds), Visionary Vehicles, TTW Turin, Myers Motors, etc. These vehicles are smaller but they are not NEVs. Ultimately, speed wins in the competition, so low speed NEVs don’t have a chance. That said, there are a handful of Contenders who do currently produce NEVs but are planning to create a vehicle with greater speed and more mainstream applications (i.e. ZAP!, T3, Miles Electric, et. al.).

We’ll say what the newspapers say: “we regret the error” and thanks to Buddenbaum.

During a panel discussion on public transportation today at the Santa Monica AltCar Expo, Cristin Lindsay, senior director of the Automotive X Prize, gave us a bit more information about the teams that have signed up to participate in the race. You might remember that in late August, the X Prize foundation announced that there were over 100 teams that had signed up to compete for the $10 million prize. While we’ve gotten our fair share of interviews in with some of these teams, we certainly haven’t looked at all of them and don’t quite know what sorts of vehicles they’re working on. Indeed, the foundation is still vetting the teams for the competition. Today, during the Big Blue Bus panel, Lindsay said that 50 of those teams are working on small neighborhood vehicles, including low-speed NEVs. So, if you’re expecting a whole bunch of Tesla Roadsters in the race when it starts next year, might want to recheck your expectations.

You can hear Lindsay mention this X Prize update at around minute 29 in the audio included in this post.

UPDATE: well, maybe not.

X Prize asks: “What’s Your Crazy Green Idea?”

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg at the official start of the Auto X Prize.

Sometimes, people on the green fringe are called some not-so-nice names, with “crazy” being one of the more mild. But, if you’re the kind of greenie who revels in the wacky, perhaps you’ve got an idea you’d like to share with the world and you’re sick of yelling it from the highway overpass. Right now would be a good time to get your idea out there, because the mainstream X Prize Foundation is looking for “Crazy Green Ideas” and is willing to pay $25,000 for them. Well, for one of them at least.

The X Prize Foundation, which is putting together the Progressive Auto X Prize, today announced a video contest called “What’s Your Crazy Green Idea?” that has a $25,000 prize for “the best video proposing a new, world-changing X PRIZE in the field of Energy and the Environment.” Use dreams to power Segways? Capture energy from people typing on a keyboard to power the computer? Harness the energy from unladen swallows or migrating coconuts? These are all fair game for the crazy idea contest. Whether they’ll win - well, that’s up to the X Prize folks.

The short version of the rules is that they need to be two-minutes long, posted to YouTube soon (winners will be announced in December) and must answer the following three questions:

1. What is the specific prize idea?
2. What is the Grand Challenge or world-wide problem that you are trying to solve?
3. How will this prize benefit humanity?

Submit your videos here. More details after the break.

This is a post for all of the American city officials we have who read AutoblogGreen (or readers who know someone in city government). The Automotive X Prize is looking for cities in America to host stages of the fuel-efficient vehicle race in 2009-2010. An official Request for Proposal (RFP) will be released at the Detroit Auto Show in the next few days.

What will your city get for hosting a stage? Publicity, mostly. The race will go through “ten U.S. cities while being broadcast to a global audience in 2009 and 2010, building consumer demand for vehicles in the competition and demonstrating many practical, clean and affordable vehicle options. This opportunity represents a visual, hands-on forum for Host Cities and individual administrations to drive public behavior toward reducing environmental impact.”

If you want to be a part of the race but don’t happen to work for an American city, don’t worry. The organizers are
“seeking national, regional and local sponsors to underwrite the stage race competition,” which means they’ll be happy to take your money. Details after the jump.

Automotive X PRIZE to Inspire Green Auto Innovators and Environmentally Aware Cities at 2008 Detroit Auto Show
$10 Million+ Competition to Offer First Glimpse of Contenders and Launch Search for Host Cities

DETROIT, MI, January 10, 2008 - The Automotive X PRIZE, a competition designed to inspire a new generation of viable, super-efficient vehicles, will release a Request for Proposal (RFP) to U.S. cities interested in hosting a stage of the 2009-2010 race competition at this year’s North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit. The Automotive X PRIZE will showcase the innovations of its early entrants at their booth during the show’s Press Preview and Industry Days, January 13-18.

The Automotive X PRIZE, which was created to help break the world’s addiction to oil and stem the effects of climate change, is an independent and technology-neutral competition, open to teams from around the world who can design, build and bring to market 100 MPG equivalent vehicles that people want to buy, and that meet market needs for price, size, capability, safety and performance.

To date, more than fifty teams from seven countries have signed Letters of Intent to compete and the Automotive X PRIZE continues to solicit additional teams to enter the competition. The window of opportunity for interested teams to register will remain open for at least the next 60 days. Once the competition launches-in early 2008-those that qualify will embark on a rigorous cross country race that combines speed, distance, urban driving and overall performance in 2009-2010. The winners will need to exceed 100 MPG equivalent fuel economy, fall under strict emissions caps and finish in the fastest time.

“The Automotive X PRIZE has the potential to revolutionize the auto industry. Competitors and U.S. cities have a unique opportunity to help bring about tangible, positive change: lower fuel costs, reduced carbon emissions, and an invigorated market. Our participation in Detroit, and the launch of this RFP process are major milestones in this competition,” noted Don Foley, Executive Director of the Automotive X PRIZE.

The racing segment of the Automotive X PRIZE is expected to travel through ten U.S. cities while being broadcast to a global audience in 2009 and 2010, building consumer demand for vehicles in the competition and demonstrating many practical, clean and affordable vehicle options. This opportunity represents a visual, hands-on forum for Host Cities and individual administrations to drive public behavior toward reducing environmental impact. Details on the Host City RFP will be available at the Automotive X PRIZE booth.
In addition to seeking support from U.S. cities, the Automotive X PRIZE is seeking national, regional and local sponsors to underwrite the stage race competition. “Thousands of bright minds, from all over the world, will gather in Detroit next week. We’re hopeful that new individuals, groups and industry sponsors will see the possibilities within this competition, and answer our call to action,” added Foley.

To date, the Automotive X PRIZE has received support and encouragement from several government agencies that will help the privately funded organization conduct the competition and test vehicle compliance, including the U.S. Department of Energy and Argonne National Laboratory; the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway, Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA); the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Transportation and Air Quality (OTAQ); and the California Air Resources Board (CARB).

In addition, non-governmental organizations supporting the Automotive X PRIZE include the National Wildlife Federation, National Resources Defense Council, Union of Concerned Scientists, the Apollo Alliance, the Consumer Federation of America, Global Green USA, CALSTART and Greenpeace among others.
